what kind of car?

the other night at dinner, in a buoyant mood, I threw out a question to the group:

"if you were a car, what kind of car would you be?"

since it was a work-related group, i said, "or we can do ships--if you were a ship, what type of ship would you be?" but the guys at the table didn't want to go for that, since ships are usually referred to in the feminine, this made them uncomfortable. so cars it was.

i'm actually still waiting for their answers, as no one was able to answer off the cuff. we even brought it up in a meeting the next day, while we were waiting for the last person to arrive and it seemed that people found it an intriguing question.

since it was my question and part of a game we used to play back in college, i was the only one able to answer. what's interesting, but no doubt unsurprising, is that my answer now is far more nuanced than it was back then.

so, naturally, i'm a porsche 911--quick, expensive, a classic that never goes out of fashion, a bit loud, a bit rough, not entirely comfortable to be near, but yet strangely you want to be near. and let's not forget high maintenance.

what kind of car are you? and remember, this is not about what kind of car you would like to drive or own or what kind of car you do drive or own, it's you, in car form.

many many years ago, i was told that i was an expensive sleek sports car - like a 911 - with no starter. ooh. mean.

today, old mercedes diesel - dependable, slow to start but good when going, classic lines.
