obsessed with eyelashes

when i was in singapore in september, i noticed that lots of women were wearing false eyelashes as a standard part of their makeup and i wondered if that was fashionable in other parts of the world. for me, it started at halloween, when i bought long purple eyelashes for my halloween costume...

right after that, i went to the philippines where i found a store that was pretty much all eyelashes--ones with feathers, ones with sparkles, blue ones, green ones (sadly, they wouldn't let me take a picture). and now, i find myself putting some on even when it's not a special occasion (tho' not every day, it's not THAT bad).

and now, i just read in the nytimes that the folks who brought us botox are going to introduce a new drug that promotes eyelash growth. i know what you're thinking, julie, you're in your early 40s, you shouldn't be concerning yourself with such things, when will you ever grow up...and you're probably right. but i just can't help it. eyelashes are just so fabulous. i always feel a little bit marilyn when i put them on. and that's always a good thing.

EDIT:  i just had to add this wonderful fact that i just learned on this website (thank you google for eavesdropping on all of my mails and giving me links) to this eyelash posting:  legendary silent film director D. W. Griffith invented false eyelashes in 1916 for his film intolerance. now how cool is that?

You know, you SHOULD worry about it. Whatever makes you feel wonderful/confident is worth doing.(especially if it is as simple as a pair of eyelashes)I LOVE eyelashes! My children stole mine during pregnancy (but now they have fab lashes!) I find that the older I get the more I wonder what a number is anyway?
I love it!

Yes, feeling like Marilyn is definitely a good thing. I think you should work those purple lashes into 'everyday wear' or at least a bimonthly outing. ;)

BTW, sorry I didn't mean to intrude on your other blog.

Okay, I just took the bait...

First off, there's no reason why you can't wear false lashes (I like the little "sprigs" of three or four lashes) a few days a week, especially if you're using a good glue, applying the lashes correctly, and then removing them gently.

Things to remember:

1. DON'T use that liquid (looks watery, sometimes in a glass vial) glue. It's called waterproof and it's like superglue. It will seriously take your lashes off when you remove the fakes. If you use the rubbery kind, you should be fine.

The Shu Uemura one is tops, I think. Let it "cure" for 30 on the lash before you apply it and it'll stick better.

2. You don't need an injection... try a product called Talika. I was so convinced this stuff was hooey, but I tried it and it really did improve my lashes. I used it for two weeks with absolutely no results and then all of a sudden my lashes looked longer and thicker.

The only reason I haven't kept it up is that you need to do it twice a day and I forget. If you're not a regular mascara wearer, it would be easy to put it on daily.

3. Don't forget about a great mascara. I'm a huge fan of the YSL Faux Cils. When applied with care, you can give the effect of fake lashes (not quite as luxe, but still).

And with that, I return to bed. Happy Lashing!

Go for it! I love long, thick lashes too ... unfortunately mine also have diminished with age.

Maybe we should start an "I wear lashes every day" club. What do you think???

I love lashes too!! My oldest son has lashes so long they actually reach above his eyebrows!!

For several months, I paid someone to apply lush, false lashes one by one with surgical glue. They looked spectacular! The only problem was that it was expensive and surgical glue has a tendency not to stick to me very well, so I had to go way more often than the NovaLash promoters recommended. When they came loose, it seemed like my own eyelashes were going with them and got thinner. There is a product that you apply like eyeliner before you go to sleep that's supposed to make your eyelashes grow. One of the hairdressers at the salon I go to swears by it. I've got a couple of tubes of it, but I always forget to apply it. Duh!

They also do eyelash extensions now. Like Botox, they are expensive and they don't last for long.

Oooo... I've always wanted to try eyelashes. I'm too chicken. Just can't do it to myself. I can't tweeze my own eyebrows either.

I have why-bother Chinese eyelashes. Tangobaby once put falsies (eyelashes, that is) on me and I did not recognize myself. I was so self-conscious all night long that I vowed never to do it again. Don't get me wrong, she did a fine job, it's just not for me.

I love them on others, Ilove your purple ones.

And all this time I thought those were Tangobaby's own lashes. Tsk.
