updating "about me"

with new people joining this year's flickr group - postcards to blog camp, i found myself typing an introduction of myself over there. since the group isn't a 365, but more of a community founded on last year's 365 and others who love their cameras and/or blog camp, it's not too late to join us (so get on over to flickr and request an invite)!! but anyway, what came out when i introduced myself there seemed like a good update of my bloggy "about me" page, so i thought i'd share it with you here, since there are also lots of new faces around here. you can also find it on the "about me" tab above.

i'm american, but have lived in denmark for a dozen years (and counting) after following a very cute danish boy home from the balkans in the late 90s. i still have my US passport (unless sarah palin becomes president - then i'll be giving it up and applying not only for a danish one but asylum on the grounds of cruel jokes played by the universe (but i digress)).  in the past year, we (my danish husband, who is actually called husband, and our daughter, sabin) moved to a falling-down farm property in the uncool part of denmark (jutland), which i promptly tried to convince everyone was "the new black," (no one believed it). the property itself isn't falling down, just the house, which was built in 1895. but we have a lake and room for a pony and the land itself is beautiful, so we're happy to have to spend the next ten years tearing it down and rebuilding it getting it the way we want it.

i struggle all the time with trying to live a simpler, less consumer-oriented life, but then apple comes out with some fabulous new product and i fall once again..sigh. but our move to the farm is part of that seeking simplicity...we'll soon have a big garden and intend to get a few pigs and chickens so we know where our eggs and bacon are coming from. hoping to live a bit of that old BBC series - the good life - but with ultra-modern, attractive and well-designed electronics.

i recently left a job that was crushing my spirit and am excited about a new venture i'm starting with a friend i met first here in the blogosphere and then in real life. so you never know where your bloggy friendships might take you.

i love nikons, iPhones, horses, cats, bunnies, my macbook air, the iPad (you're getting the picture on the appleism, right?), sewing, quilting, stitching, pretty paper, cooking, antiques and traveling. i'm not very religious (unless you count the appleism) and i don't much like capital letters.

this girl: an update

thanks to some hints from bambi and her sister barb and their recent this girl posts and because i'm finally feeling like myself again, it seemed like it was time for an update of the this girl post (which, to give credit where credit is due, was started by the fabulous gillian ever so long ago).

~ hates righteousness, but can be pretty righteous at times.

~ needs more courage.

~ needs more discipline.

~ needs more practice.

~ needs less stuff.

~ needs to focus.

~ loves rocks and cameras and feathers and books and art supplies.

~ takes photos every day.

~ hates to capitalize. especially i.

~ talks too loud.

~ gets what she wants.

~ has a sneaking suspicion that it will all work out.

~ likes robots and eyeballs and embroidery floss and brand new pens.

~ wears blue nail polish.

~ watches too much LA Ink, Miami Ink and What Not to Wear on Discovery Travel & Living.

~ has a list of names to submit to What Not to Wear (with Clinton & Stacey).

~ should probably herself be on that list.

~ is superior and humble. haughty and kind. snobby and forgiving. messy and obsessive compulsive. thoughtful and oblivious. one big mass of contradictions. and likes it that way.

~ loves cats and horses and bunnies.

~ wants pigs and a few chickens.

~ goes to bed too late every single night.

~ loves her iPhone. and iMac. and iPad. and her nikon(s).

~ wishes stuff didn't matter so much.

~ wishes sometimes she didn't care so much.

~ is glad she cares so much. because it's what makes her who she is.

this girl...

i thought it was time to update my long-ago this girl post, because it starts to feel like i'm a slightly different girl now, tho' much of that post is undoubtedly still true. life doesn't stand still.

this girl...

...rests more easily in herself these days. she feels sure of her decisions and her place in the world. she knows what she wants and has at least an idea of the first steps towards getting it.

...at times feels impatient with the pace of things. she wishes they would just happen already.

...doesn't always use her time as wisely as she could.

...has a much better idea of what she needs from the people around her and especially from her work than she once did.

...believes that writing is the new praying.

...is moving towards living a more creative life.

...has a more generous spirit than she sometimes lets on.

...has SO many ideas. so many that it's sometimes quite paralyzing.

...isn't that fond of sentimentality. or sap. or fake people. or people whose contribution to a conversation is about something they once saw on a reality t.v. show.

...finds the universe a mysterious place at times.

...really wants to simplify, but finds it difficult. and she also has a terrible time getting rid of stuff.

...wonders if she has enjoyed the child enough and isn't really ready for her to be a 'tween and start texting and hiding in her room and all that.

...has realized that followers come and go and that's just life. and the same is true with friends.

...is still nikon not canon. a mac not a PC. iPhone not blackberry. more barthes than baudrillard. murakami not dan brown (in fact, she feels a bit uncomfortable putting them together in a binary). more big ten than ivy league. more cook than chef. black tea not green. salty not sweet.

...loves a latté in the early afternoon and a glass of wine in the evening.

...is a sucker for a british crime show (morse, midsomer, frost, bergerac, taggart, lynley - you name it).

...loves learning and searching and trying new things.

...needs to laugh every single day.

...is still a bee charmer.

and who are you boys and girls? (give it a try, it's really fun to write in the 3rd person.)
