3D street art or brande beats give again

brande, the next little town over, and where sabin went to school for the past year, held a street art festival a few weeks ago. we were busy with vikings that weekend and didn't attend, but many of the works are still there and i had a quick stop to have a look the other day. they had done these 3D pieces. it's so funny how in person, the eye compensates and they don't pop out, but in photos, they do. i wish our little town could get together about something and stage similar events. but alas, there's too much infighting and too many factions. why are little towns their own worst enemy sometimes?

* * *

have you seen the photo of nixon's last meal before he resigned?
it's arranged, it's styled, it's prosaic.
it's positively instagrammable.
(thank you, bill.)

berlin wall - east side gallery

i took these last may when we were in berlin and i can't believe i haven't shared them before now. love the variety and diversity of expression on this little section of the berlin wall. it makes me want to spend more time there in an environment that fosters such creativity.

signs of berlin

because it's the weekend and i'm still hankering for my blog camp weekend in berlin of a couple of weeks ago, i thought i'd share a few of the fabulous signs i saw there...
should have gone back to this club.
it looked like a happening place.

there were tons of bits of art here and there on light poles and such.
this city is bought up.
i do wonder what they meant by that, because to me the city seemed so authentic and wonderful
and not at all like it had sold out.

ya gotta love robots. tho' those teeth were slightly disturbing.

you could wander the city just photographing fantastic graphics.
i wanna go back to berlin. maybe i'll get husband a weekend there for christmas. as a kind of a self-present.

corner view: street photography

i haven't done one of jane's lovely corner views in ages, but today, it was street photography and i realized i have some copenhagen street shots that i hadn't previously shared (i also lost some in the big death/resuscitation of the iMac saga, but i won't dwell on that). so here, i give you some interesting bits from the streets of copenhagen last november:

"pear danish" - means as danish as you can get.
this in a decidedly not danish neighborhood.
i love danish irony.

 nørrebro theatre.
love that big N typeface.

once you start to look, there are bits and pieces of street art everywhere.

this says "all hanging of posters forbidden"

and right next to it: loads of rather graphic posters for a theatre piece.

this one went up on across ø/öresund at the time.

keep calm and carry on

i like this very right now take on the classic WWII phrase - keep calm and carry on - that someone took the time and spraypaint to put on the side of an S-train. i imagine them hopping a fence late at night, sneaking in to do their art furtively in the darkness. that driven to spread their message. i try to imagine what they thought when they chose those particular words. because it's a little counterintuitive coming from a graffiti artist....or perhaps not, because it seems that they do indeed carry on, despite the rather ephemeral nature of their work. and so it seemed like a good message to have in mind going into the weekend.

spend your weekend wisely, whatever you do.

street art is all around us

not so much street art as bunker art
last night, on DR2, we watched a show about street art. if you should happen to know some danish, you can find more info about it here and even watch a clip (or possibly even the whole thing, but i'm on a rubbish hotel connection, so i didn't try to play it). it was only half an hour long and even sabin was really sad when it was over.

they talked to two danish street artists - OEPS-crew who make perleplade with those little beads i used in this post. they've put them up all over the world, but especially in their neighborhood in copenhagen. to preserve their anonymity, they wore clown masks, which made them a little freaky, since i'm not that fond of clowns.

there was an interview with two women who have a site called streetart.dk and who are working on a Ph.D. on street art, which seems like a cool topic to research--and they make an interesting distinction between street art and graffiti--which they say is just tagging with one's name. unfortunately, it looks like their site is under renovation at the moment and not active. it was a little unfortunate that, since they were just featured on t.v. you'd think people would want their site to be up and running when they get publicity for it...but i digress.

another cool site they featured was knittaplease.com, where they knit all kinds of public objects..like bicycle racks and lamp posts and trees and such. how cool is that? i've seen some of that kind of thing on flickr, but again, the rubbish connection is keeping me from properly finding links for you.

anyway, the whole thing was so inspiring, it made me want to go on a walk intentionally looking for street art in my town and especially in copenhagen. and it made me think about making some. sometimes t.v. can be inspiring. however, what i'm watching at the moment, not so much...but for more about that, see twitter.
