100 happy days :: day 88

a walk in the evening sunshine, picking a few lilacs and hanging out in the garden with the cats, who also seemed happy to have some sunshine at last. a happy end to a not-so-happy day where i was down with a stomach bug. thank goodness for laptops and getting work done in pajamas.

* * *

there's nothing funny about the slimy dugger case.
but this guardian piece might make you laugh,
just because it's so cleverly written.

* * *

mini cocktails. they're a thing.

* * *

i liked this piece on growing older and wiser (or not) from the house of edward.

* * *

it seems like the world is conspiring to try to talk me into running.

skopje has been "upgraded" and from what i can tell from the pictures, it doesn't look good.

contrasts

on the same day, i picked up a vintage typewriter that we bought on an auction because it reminded me of one dad had at the enterprise during my childhood and i also got a new 21.5" iMac to replace my severely aging 24" iMac from 2008. talk about a contrast in technologies. i can't believe how thin and sleek the iMac is! and fast. and quiet. it is good to upgrade, but it's also nice to do a little old school typing. i think it's a little bit of a shame that today's computers aren't going to be able to be acquired in the future as working machines that can be used in the same way as a good old fashioned typewriter.

time accelerates

i had to turn over the ribbon on the typewriter, so now i'm typing in red. i think i like it. tho' i don't know where this summer has gone.

the pleasures of typing

i read tom hanks' delightful ode to the typewriter from yesterday's nytimes. who knew he could write like that? what a multi-talented man. but i digress. already and i'm only three sentences in. *sigh* immediately after reading it, i rushed to my little antique erika typewriter, removed the poem by head doctor morgen schiebel of viborg hospital that came in it and made myself a funny little list.

i can only say that tom is so completely right. the pleasures of the sound and the feel of the keys and seeing the letters appear on the paper cannot be underestimated. i'm going to start every morning this week with a little old-fashioned typing. i'm not going to wax on and on about it, as tom expressed it all so beautifully. i'm definitely going to be needing more vintage typewriters.
