things i'm wondering...
when you drive a long way, you have loads of time to think and wonder about things. things like:
~ how on earth will i survive the corporate world after being in a creative one?
~ did the cat miss me while i was away?
~ speaking of the cat, how is she going to adjust to moving across the country?
~ do we need a filipino nanny?
~ what were they doing on my computer while i wasn't here?
~ why hasn't KLM sent the official confirmation of the reservation i made this morning? will they blame it on the volcanic ash?
~ what will be left after we're gone?
~ does the danish hollywood wives television show mean that the world has indeed gone mad?
~ why do PCs still exist when there are macs?
~ ditto for all other phones when there are iPhones?
~ why does anyone use internet explorer when there are other browsers?
~ how did i get along on flickr before i knew about greasemonkey scripts?
~ why did i eat all that junk food?
~ just because things have always been done a certain way, doesn't mean that it's right.
~ how do you, as an individual, work to create a better corporate culture?
~ is facebook really an instrument of the lord? (disclaimer: not me who thought this, but one of my FB "friends")
~ will i ever live in a windmill?
now run along and do something to celebrate the earth. what i did was notice the amazing light all the way home. the earth is cool. let's take care of it, shall we?

things i've learned...
...while knitting:
~ knitting requires a project basket. it's not always easy to find the right project basket and you might have go to 4-5 different stores, including antique stores, looking for one.
~ you cannot knit and read at the same time. at least not if you're me. note to self: acquire audio books.
~ it's a bit hard to keep all of the criminals straight if you're knitting while watching midsomer murders and seldom look up because of your need to concentrate on the knitting.
~ splitty yarn bites.
~ it does get easier the more you do.
~ changing colors is WAY easier than you think it will be.
~ one of the reasons my previous attempts at knitting failed was that i had no idea what i was making, now that i know what i'm making, it's much easier to keep going.
...picking up my loom:
~ you shouldn't lose the phone number of the people you're buying the loom from, because they won't necessarily remember you when you show up at their door.
~ a disassembled loom is a rather overwhelming pile of sticks.
~ a pile of sticks can begin an adventure.
~ the windmill looks much better against a blue sky on a sunny day.
...from my child:
i am ever, eternally, in awe, of sabin's ability to jump fully into every moment. she never, ever waits or wants to wait for "the right time" to do things. if she wants to turn a cardboard box into an airplane/car for her bear, she just begins. she collects the things she needs as she goes along and as she thinks of them, but she jumps into the task from the very first moment. if she gets hungry along the way, she incorporates picnic supplies (cucumber, blueberries, tomatoes, a thermos), stowing them in the "trunk" of the car.
but she lets nothing stand in the way of imagination or of execution of the vision of the airplane/car that forms in her head - a boxed taped to the back to function as a trunk, yellow tape for the headlights, yarn and a matchbox as a seatbelt, a key of cardboard covered in black tape. i really wish i could be more like that. i get extremely held back in the "collecting the materials" stage of things and then it's sometimes very hard for me to begin the actual project.
p.s. it's so cool that blogger has added captions to the photos. makes wordpress look even more like the internet explorer of the blogging world, and not just from a security standpoint, but from a lame, so yesterday kinda standpoint. go blogger!

living in a windmill or a girl can dream
my desire to live in a windmill is growing. there's something so romantic about them. and the idea of living within that rounded space just appeals. think of the decorating possibilities alone. a round dining table. built-in couches with loads of pillows around the edges of a big room, walls lined with books. when we went to see the loom the other day, this beauty was right across the road. nobody lives in this one and you could drive your car under it, but isn't it just so romantic? especially since i antiqued it in lightroom.
it was quite lovely, even in the snow.
then, we saw this one over in jylland. these people clearly ARE living in it and it looks wonderful even tho' its windmill bit is gone. you'd still have that fabulous rounded shape and all those stories, winding ever upward to a little room at the top, designed just for writing.
and there's this one down on møn. it has some bits of its windmill left. and i just love the almost russian onion dome shape of the top of it.
but i could also be talked into a lighthouse.
