charlie's latest masterpieces
our charlie outdid herself this time - having four gorgeous kittens! one looks so much like frieda, only she has white paws, then there's a little frankie tuxedo cat with white paws and lastly, two of her usual - white with spots of color (black and orange) on their heads. so sweet and wonderful! it makes us so happy to have kittens. and charlie's are always easy to find homes for. i'll admit i'm already scheming ways of keeping the little frieda look alike. i do love torties.

meet bacon & bacon
this is bacon & bacon. we decided to name them that so that we don't get too attached and so that we remember what it's all about.
but i suspect it's going to be awfully hard not to fall in love with them. just a little bit. they're curious and funny and make all sorts of cute pig sounds. and just look at those little ears! and that expression. *sigh*
they are just so cute, one with ginger spots around her eyes and the other with a big black spot on her side.
they're as happy as can be in their new pen. there's lots and lots of weeds and even a few old potatoes to dig up and eat. i'm sure they'll have it cleaned up very nicely by the end of the summer. at least we hope so. it must have been a pretty stressful day for them, being taken from all of their friends, loaded into a trailer and brought to our house, because they've been napping all afternoon in the straw in their little pig shelter. poor little dears.
we got them from a nearby farmer who raises organic pigs that get to live their lives out in fields. we paid a little bit more for them than we would have from one of the big indoor pig operations, but we wanted to know they'd already had a good life, just the few weeks they are into it. and we definitely intend to let them continue that good life, at least until it comes time to make bacon.

broody hens
you couldn't tell it by looking outside, where snow is softly falling as we "speak," but there are signs of spring around here. this morning, these three little fellas (they'd better be girls) greeted me when i peeked in to check on their mama, who has been nesting in an odd spot away from the coop. i wasn't sure when she began, but thought she must be getting close. there are two more eggs in the nest, but i think they're duds. i wish i could reach them to take them out of there, but she's found such a weird place, i can only reach her with my camera lens. it's funny, if you google how to handle letting your chickens hatch out their eggs, you'll be led to believe it's impossible. we have definitely learned otherwise. last year, we started with 12 chickens and now we've got 30 (33 if you count these new ones). nature is pretty cool.
and this little hen, with the fetching straw on her head, is also in an odd spot away from the coop in another building. she was off her nest when i checked this morning and i found out she's working on hatching out TWENTY eggs. she must have had some help laying those, as i sincerely doubt she did it herself. those other hens are clever, getting her to do all the work.
late this afternoon when i was feeding the horses, i found another hen hunkered down out in the horse barn. that's what you get when you have free range chickens, you never know where you'll find them.
last year, the broody hens drove me nuts, as it stopped the egg laying, but i'm getting up to ten a day right now and we can't keep up anyway (i've been giving eggs to everyone who comes by and took some to my friends at the library as well), so i'm just charmed by it. hens are so funny - they have a wide vocabulary and i just get a big kick out of them. so much more so than i ever thought i would. and these broody hens and their little chicks make me think spring must be on its way. right?

a little in love
a walk.
golden light.
birdsong in the air.
cows munching.
they're not our cows, but they're in our pasture.
and i'm a little in love.
did you know that cows are friendly?
they come running over when we go out there.
full of unrestrained cow joy
at the sight of us.
and wanting to say hello.
tho' they're strangely afraid of the cat.
and he only wants to play.
our couchsurfer sang to them in norwegian.
you should have seen them.
they were transfixed.
and a little bit in love.
one of them has a heart-shape on her forehead.
i'm a little in love with that.
but it's easy to fall in love when there's a few moments of sunshine.
