south dakota skies

one thing i can't get enough of when i'm back in south dakota are the spectacular skies. the sky just seems bigger there - it's farther to the horizon and the clouds are just spectacular. we don't have clouds with so much character here in denmark. i suppose it's the difference between continental clouds and coastal ones. they just get so much more time to form and have depth - whether they carry the foreboding of an approaching storm or the fluffiness of a summer afternoon - south dakota clouds are simply the best.

Great photo's. I used to live in Omaha and traveled some in S. Dakota. Actually, met my first tornado there! Another element I noticed there were color bands on the horizon, at sunrise and sunset. probably because the distance to the horizon and the curvature of the earth acts like a prism, beautiful.

I love your pics. We have such uninteresting clouds here -- general fog or little wispy things, usually -- that I love it when I go back to Minnesota and spend a lot of time photographing clouds. Also, I'm trying to paint watercolor clouds, and it's not easy, believe me!
