100 happy days :: day 74

we'd been looking everywhere, but finally, in the adidas store in copenhagen, we got to see all. the. colors. the awesome adidas supercolor superstars make you think you probably need them all. but at 50 x 700 kroner, that would be quite an investment.  i got yellow and sabin got purple. she would have chosen light blue, but they were out of her size. we will probably have to go back. one pair just isn't enough.

lest you think i'm no longer capable of shallow consumerism

I probably won't be able to resist these

there's a kind of pop-up store in town. it's run by a couple of local bored housewives of wealthy husbands. they buy up a bunch of remainders and various things that apparently "fell off" a container somewhere and then open up for a week or so and sell it all out. i've actually not visited it previously, but i stopped by on a whim the other day. and amidst various nescafe coffee machines and lamps and some suspicious-looking computer equipment, they had these shoes by paris hilton. i would have bought them if i'd been able to squeeze my big fat cinderella's ugly stepsister foot into them, but alas they didn't have my size.

got these instead

instead i got these. they're not paris hilton. i see that as a good thing. and better yet, they fit and make me seem very tall.

and these.

and i also got these. and for both? a mere 200 kroner (that's $36 for the currency-challenged). they look black in this shot, but they're dark blue. and surprisingly comfortable too.

23/9.2013 - who knew #havianas made wellies?

i also got these, but i ordered them online, i didn't get them in the pop-up shop. i didn't know havianas made wellies, i thought they only did flipflops. aren't these the best color? they called it aubergine, but i think it's a bit more of a plum.

the shoes have it

i think the blogger gods know that i have been invited to contribute to a wordpress blog and they have intervened to make me completely unable to upload any pictures to wordpress. i don't have the tab or the lefthand menu item when i sign in, so for me, wordpress is photo-free, which kinda defeats the whole purpose, since the blog i've been roped in invited to is in fact, a tumblr-style photo blog, wherein we - wait, you're gonna love this, heidikins -  document the shoes we're wearing every day. it's called shoe per diem and it's by the fabulous stacey of discounderworld fame (speaking of which, have you checked out the vice issue?). much easier for me in light of wordpress hating me is the fact that there's also a flickr group. so if you want to share your shoes, i'm sure stacey would be happy to hook you up (just click that flickr link, ask to be invited and start shooting your shoes).

tripping down memory lane

i'm clearing a whole lot of boxes out of the attic. i had saved loads of sabin's baby clothes up there, for some unknown reason. perhaps for a sibling that never materialized. perhaps because they seemed so precious i couldn't bear to part with them. perhaps saving them for a rainy day. maybe because in my last life, i was in the siege of leningrad. maybe i'm part squirrel? or maybe just because i'm an incurable packrat.  but in any case, i've gotten them down and i'm going through them. i've decided it's time to wash them all up and save the ones i want to use to make her a quilt of her baby and toddler life and to donate the rest.

and i'm finding it strangely difficult. all those sweet little bitty clothes that i remember her wearing. it brings tears to my eyes to see them again and think of all the times i dressed her in them and washed them and folded them. remembering occasions when she wore them. me, feeling sentimental, imagine that? i hate sentimental, but i can't help it. just looking at these little shoes makes me tear up like a big baby. and i'm honestly not sure i can part with them. what is it about them? some lucky little girl out there could probably really use them, the toes are scuffed a little bit, but it's nearly in a charming way and there's really a lot of use left in them. they should be of use to someone, not tucked away in a box in our attic. i wish i could think of a way to incorporate them into a quilt that's a topography of her life thus far, but one doesn't spring readily to mind. why oh why is it so hard to face giving them away?

it's a bit strange, because i love the big girl sabin is becoming and in many ways don't miss her babyhood. i love how much she does for herself and how much fun she is now - she was also fun then, but in a different, more needy way. but tiny little clothes and shoes are just so sweet. now her big old long toes poke holes out the ends of her tights, back then, they were just so sweet and little. maybe that's it, i just have a thing for miniature things. maybe i'll just keep the red shoes and donate the rest (including the most precious pair ever of silver and pink nike shox). i've even got the original box for those. hmm, why is it so hard to let go of things?

feeling a bit noir

since it took me an inordinately long time to process photos, upload and create this mosaic, i have nothing left for proper words to go with it. it's a busy, hectic week. talking to lots of old friends and making new ones. after six hours on the above shoes on tuesday night (and i do mean ON, not in--look how high those heels are), my feet spent all of wednesday not speaking to me. 'til i bought them new chucks and a new pair of el naturalistas, after which we have made a tentative rapprochement. if you've been on twitter, you've seen both. i'll provide proper shots of them when i'm back home on the weekend. i'm tired of the carpet in my hotel room (see above).

really loved everyone's lists of simple things yesterday. huge thank you to christina for the initiative--i made a whole lot of new friends and i felt totally recharged here in the middle of my hectic week just by reading everyone's lists of what they love. thank you all!!!

fabulosity all around (and a giveaway)

i'm all for looking at the world differently, with fresh eyes, from a new perspective. wearing orange tights with red shoes and taking photos of my feet against the green grass in front of a snotty spa hotel in skodsborg while i wait for husband. but seriously, i have to draw the line somewhere and that somewhere is here.  apparently nancy reagan gets regular visits from ronnie during which he talks to her. i always knew the woman was nuts. tho' admittedly running the US by astrology does seem better in retrospect than the 8 years of the bush administration.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU!! so big, i had to use actual capital letters, so that's big. thanks to all of you and your votes, my story will make the print issue of disco underworld. i quite literally couldn't have done it without you, so to celebrate, i'm going to give away one of my helleristning stones.  if you want to be entered to win, please leave a comment on this post. i think i will make an entirely new helleristning on one of my stones from my recent trip to norway, so this picture is just a sample. you will get a totally new, unique to you, very own helleristning. :-)

so, to review: leave a comment to win a helleristning stone on a stone from norway. it's my thanks to you for helping me make the print issue of discounderworld! and speaking of discounderworld, there's a new issue out now, full of cool people and things! you can go read it right after you finish reading here. :-)

my lovely assistant (i haven't decided yet whether it's sabin or husband) will draw the winner on friday.

did you know that you're limited to 200 characters in labels? it's practically a tweet. i'm feeling restricted!

and while i was sitting here, killing time waiting for magazine proofs and in between last-minute edits and trying to shoo a bumble bee out of the addition (they get totally confused by the big windows), the mailman knocked on my door. he brought me this:

a package from the fabulous (i know, i'm overusing that word, i can't help it, there's just so much fabulousity) lynne of wheatlands news. and look what was inside!

rocks and toys and cards, oh my!
and lynne's 82-year-old mom made the cards.
i love that!!

these are seriously cool toys!
husband is gonna love these.
and so is sabin.
i might have to hide them and play with them all by myself.

and each of these rocks is cooler than the next!
lynne calls us stone freaks rotsifarians--b/c rots is rock in afrikaans--i LOVE that too!
the flat one is from namibia
the others are from diamond diggings at alexander bay
the red one is a "red luck stone" because it indicates the presence of diamonds (cool!)

and the little one is covered in eyes!!!
i love the little beaded doll too.
it appeals to my superstitious side.

THANK YOU LYNNE!!!
i love having these little pieces of africa right here in denmark.

blog camp note:  don't forget about blog camp II scheduled for september 4-7 here in denmark. i have room for 4 and one spot is tentatively booked. all of you north americans should be checking ticket prices right now (i hear air france is having a sale (ha, bad joke, but i couldn't resist)). but seriously, there are some good prices out there, so do book ahead! and if you're coming all that way, we can arrange for spending a bit more time than just a long weekend.  there may be one more blog camp during 2009 in the US--we're in the tentative stage of planning a trip and just might make time for a few days of blog camp fun sometime in the autumn. stay tuned for updates on that one.
